Mohamed Shahin Chicago Weekend 2008

Mohamed Shahin is internationally renowned as a dancer, choreographer and instructor specializing in the traditional male folkloric dances of Egypt.  A graduate of the famous El Kowmaia School in Cairo, Mohamed has appeared in numerous Egyptian films and videoclips, and served as artistic director for the dance troupe for singer Samir Sabry.  His expertise in all styles of Egyptian dance, innovative choreography, and magnetic personality have made him a highly sought-after dance mentor not only in Egypt, but in the United States, Asia, Latin America, and Africa. www.mohamedshahin.net

Technique Clinics

“Chiftitelli with Attitude” 10am-11:30am

Natasha of Portland has performed regularly in events, restaurants, and nightclubs over the past 11 years, including 4 years in Chicago dancing at top venues like Ala Turka, Souk, Kan Zaman, D'Vine and The Greek Islands.  Her vibrant performances showcase her studies in both Turkish and Romany Gypsy style.  She will instruct on strengthening taxsim technique and add Turkish flavor to this classic rhythm structure.

 

“American Greek Cabaret” 11:45-1:15pm  

Although Detroit is her home base, Norma has been dancing for almost 30 years and has traveled throughout the US and Canada performing at Greek and Arabic supper clubs and twice was the featured dancer for the Canadian based tour group "Holiday in Greece." Norma will be teaching how to structure and format an American Greek-style cabaret routine as it was performed in Greektowns throughout the US and Canada during the 1960's-1990's.

 

“Khaleeji and Finger Cymbols” 1:30-3:00pm

Shadia of Detroit has danced in 38 countries around the world, mostly in the Middle East, for 19 years.  She performed extensively in the Gulf region at 5-star hotels and will be teaching their dance during the first section of a 2-part class - first part - Khaleeji Dance, second part - Finger Cymbols.

 

Each clinic is $30, or $55 for two, or $80 for all three

 

Many gently-used professional costumes available for purchase, as well as veils, cymbols, and khaleeji dresses to borrow or purchase.

Saiidi

Saiidi is one of the most famous traditional dances of Egypt, incorporating the use of one or two sticks or canes into a lively interaction. “Raks Assaya” is a more acrobatic and graceful version of the stick dance, or Tahtib, that is performed by men as a depiction of combat.

Mohamed will highlight correct application of movement to instrumentation as well as the personal dynamics and technique of classical Egyptian bellydance through his own original choreography.
